ChatGPT sidebar too long? How to clean up hundreds of chats

To organize a ChatGPT sidebar with hundreds of chats, archive instead of deleting. An archived chat leaves the sidebar but stays in your account, still shows up in ChatGPT’s search, and can be unarchived; a deleted chat cannot be restored. The safe order is: export a backup, rename the chats you will reopen, pin the few you use daily, move big ongoing topics into Projects, archive the rest, and add folders with an extension if you still want the long tail in reach. Archiving and deleting single chats is one at a time; the only bulk options in Settings act on every chat at once.

Why the sidebar gets this long

The sidebar is one list with no folders, tags or date filter, and every new chat adds a line. After a few months you have hundreds of similar titles. Users have asked OpenAI for better organization and for multi-select and bulk delete (see the community threads on sidebar organization, multi-select and bulk delete and triage controls). Until that exists, these are the tools you have.

Step 0: Back up first

Step 1: Archive, do not delete

Open the chat’s ••• menu and choose Archive. There is no confirmation. Archived chats are listed in Settings > Data controls > Archived chats, where you can unarchive or delete them.

  Archive Delete
Leaves the sidebar Yes Yes
Can be brought back Yes, from Archived chats No
Found by search Yes No
Good for Finished work you might want later Chats with nothing worth keeping, or details you want gone

Data controls also has Archive all chats and Delete all chats. They act on every chat in the account or workspace, including chats inside Projects, and there is no way to pick a date range. Archive all can be undone, but only by unarchiving chats one at a time. Delete all cannot be undone.

A deleted chat disappears from your account at once and is scheduled for permanent deletion from OpenAI’s systems within 30 days. Neither ChatGPT nor OpenAI Support can restore it, and a data export cannot bring it back either.

Step 2: Rename the keepers

Before archiving in batches, rename the chats worth keeping (on the web, from the chat’s ••• menu) to something you would recognize in a list a year from now:

ChatGPT’s search matches words in a chat’s title or messages, including archived chats. Open it from the sidebar, or press Ctrl+K on Windows or Cmd+K on Mac.

Step 3: Pin the few you use every day

ChatGPT lets you pin chats so they stay in reach. Keep pins for the handful you open daily; they are a shortcut, not a filing system.

Step 4: Projects for a few big topics

A project groups chats in the sidebar with shared instructions and files. To move a chat in, drag it onto the project or choose Move to project from its menu; Remove from project moves it back.

Projects help when you have a few ongoing topics (a client, a course, a long writing job) with dozens of chats each, and you want the same instructions or files in every one of them.

They are a poor fit when:

Moving is one chat at a time, so do it only for chats you will reopen. For a longer walkthrough, see how to organize ChatGPT chats into folders.

Step 5: Folders for the long tail

If you still want a long tail of chats in reach after all that, ChatGPT has no folders for it. The options are a browser extension or relying on search.

Tidyleaf Folders for ChatGPT and Claude

Disclosure: Tidyleaf is us, and this is our product.

Free:

Tidyleaf Pro ($24 a year or $3.99 a month, one key for every Tidyleaf extension) adds unlimited folders, search inside messages with the index kept on your device, and export of a folder as Markdown files in a zip.

What it does not do: it does not archive or delete chats, alone or in bulk. Filing a chat in a folder leaves it in ChatGPT’s own list, so archive it in ChatGPT if you want it out of the sidebar. Folders are saved in the browser where you made them, so they do not sync to other devices or the ChatGPT app, and uninstalling the extension removes them. See the privacy policy.

Tidyleaf Folders is coming to the Chrome Web Store. Until it is listed, see tidyleaf.github.io and the Tidyleaf Folders page.

A safe order, in one pass

  1. Export your data and save any chat you cannot lose.
  2. Rename the 10 to 20 chats you actually reopen.
  3. Pin the few you use daily.
  4. Move the big ongoing topics into Projects.
  5. Archive finished chats, a few dozen per sitting.
  6. File the rest in folders if you want them in reach, or leave them to search.
  7. Delete only what you are sure you will never need.

FAQ

Can I delete all my ChatGPT chats at once? Yes, with Delete all chats under Settings > Data controls, but it removes every chat in the account or workspace, including those in Projects, and cannot be undone. There is no way to select a range or several chats in the sidebar. Export your data first, and consider Archive all chats instead, which you can reverse.

Is it better to archive or delete ChatGPT chats? Archive when you are not sure. Archived chats leave the sidebar but can still be searched, opened and unarchived, and they keep the same retention as regular chats. Delete when a chat holds nothing you need or has details you want gone; a deleted chat cannot be restored.

Where do archived ChatGPT chats go? To Settings > Data controls > Archived chats, where you can unarchive or delete each one. They also still appear in ChatGPT’s search.

Does archiving ChatGPT chats make ChatGPT faster? OpenAI does not say it does. Archiving takes chats out of the sidebar; the gain is a shorter list to scroll.

Will I lose my chats if I use a folders extension? Not with Tidyleaf Folders: it never deletes or changes a chat on the site, even when you delete a folder. What you can lose by uninstalling it or switching browsers is the folders, not the chats. For any other extension, check its privacy policy and what it asks to access before installing.

Can I sort ChatGPT chats by date? OpenAI’s help center describes no date sort or date filter; search filters only by type, such as chats, images, documents or projects. Search with words you remember, and rename the chats you want to find again.
