Each row also has its own .md, .docx and .html buttons for a single conversation.
conversations.json (or several conversations-000.json files) and a chat.html.conversations.json, projects.json and users.json.date title.md (or .docx, .html), or all of them in one combined Markdown file.[Image attachment] or [Attachment: name] placeholders.No. The file is read by a script on this page running in a background thread of your own browser. Open your browser's Network tab, drop a file, and you will see no request carrying your data. The page is hosted on GitHub Pages as plain static files, so there is no server of ours to receive anything. GitHub Pages does serve the page itself, so GitHub sees an ordinary page visit, as with any site.
It reads the file in a stream, one conversation at a time, so a 100 MB or larger conversations.json does not freeze the page, and we tested a 110 MB file with 125,000 messages. The limit is your computer's memory: the converted conversations are held in memory, and one zip download is capped at about 800 MB, so for the very biggest exports download in several batches. The photos and audio inside a ChatGPT zip are not read at all.
Hidden system messages, web-search results, tool output and reasoning summaries are skipped, because they are not part of the visible chat. Images and files are not converted (placeholders only). Voice and canvas details may be partial. If something you can see in the app is missing, the export format may have changed.
Neither company publishes an official specification for these files, so we wrote this against the layout of real exports as documented by the community, and it may need updating when a format changes. If a file is not recognised, the page says so instead of producing empty files.
Only ChatGPT and Claude exports are supported here. Gemini data comes from Google Takeout in a different format.
Tidyleaf, a small maker of privacy-first browser extensions. This tool is free and independent: it is not made, endorsed or reviewed by OpenAI or Anthropic. "ChatGPT" and "Claude" are used only to say which exports it reads.
Want to understand the file first? Read How to read conversations.json: how to request the export, what is in the zip, and how the mapping tree and edited branches work.
The data export takes time to arrive and covers every chat. To save the conversation you have open, our free Chrome extension adds an Export button to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini: Tidyleaf AI Chat Exporter (disclosure: our product; bulk export of all chats is a paid Pro feature, this converter is not). See how it compares.
